Although Silva make other things beside headtorches, they are a well established premium outdoor brand so should have their act together when it comes to product design and quality control. The Quad wasn't top of the range at £35 but at that price should still have functioned for more than just a few months likewise, the Ninox retails at around £45 but for that I still think it reasonable to expect more than just a couple of years of average hill and light domestic use, especially from a product the manufacturers advertise as being particularly robust. Princeton Tec are an American company who specialize in headtorches. It was made in 1962! I also have a modern DSLR (I work as a photographer occasionally) and it needed some repairs done already, after no more than 4 years of use. I have an old film rangefinder camera which I bought for 25 quid few years ago. That is why I try to stick to brands which I trust from my own experience. It's very trusted brand among compasses, but that doesn't make headlamps any better product. Although I have never heard Princeton brand, I am pretty sure that Silva is not a company which specializes in headlamps. The latter two are bombproof and the Fenix also performs very good. Nor my trusted Maglite Solitaire or Fenix E01. I have got Petzl Tikkina 2 for maybe 4 years now and it never failed, although it usually is in my "Every Day Carry" kit during winters. I think that modern things do not have that high lifetime as the old-school ones. Is my recent experience just bad luck or are gear manufacturers taking us for mugs on the assumption that we are going to keep throwing money at them no matter what? rabthecairnterrier Munro compleatist Posts: 352 Munros: 282 Corbetts: 178 Fionas: 124 Donalds: : 83 Hewitts: 110 Wainwrights: 56 Islands: 41 Joined: Location: N. Subsequently a Petzl Duo went 10+ before failing where the cable enters the battery case (not repairable). Now, my original Petzl Zoom (once upon a time everybody used one because that's all there was) lasted 15 years before dying the death. So, yet another duff torch and another £45 worth of landfill. Researching this online I found that this too was a common problem. The battery compartment is a nightmare - the lid is difficult to replace accurately with the result that the plastic lugs holding it in place are so stressed they shear off after only a few battery changes. Less than two years later this has also failed in the same way. It failed after just three months but was promptly replaced by the retailer. I liked it very much 'cos of the superb beam pattern. I then bought a Silva Ninox 'cos it was a) waterproof to 1 M and, b) supposedly "robust" and designed for tough conditions. Researching this online I found this was a common problem. still shone but bang went the waterproofing.
